Core units

• Fundamentals of Business & Management: This unit aims to develop your understanding of the business context across industry and sectors globally. You will cover the key issues and challenges facing businesses going forward and the essential role of people in dynamic, resilient and complex organisations. You will explore key functional business areas including marketing, finance, accounting, economics, people management, and organisational behaviour.ÌýÌý
• Academic & Professional Practice: You will build your confidence in both academic and professional skills. This unit will cover the academic skills which will be required at degree level study and you’ll practice them throughout the unit with support from key university services including the library and study skills team. There will also be opportunity for you to reflect on and develop your own professional skills through interactions with employers, careers services and online resources.Ìý
• Fusion Business Project: You will undertake a business project based on a real issue or problem. The Fundamentals of Business & Management unit will support you in understanding key issues and challenges which could form the basis for your project.Ìý Projects will be undertaken in workplaces, community settings or part of research processes related to your chosen field of study. You will be allocated an academic mentor who will support you in developing and undertaking the project.ÌýÌý

The first year provides you with an understanding of micro- and macro-economics, as well as other key subject areas that are fundamental to being successful in business and management. You'll also begin to develop the independence, versatility and other personal qualities needed to manage in a global context.

Core units:

• Developing Management Competencies: You'll be exposed to real-life business and management challenges, enabling you to develop interpersonal, organisational, transferable, creative and reflective learning skills, as well as a learning culture founded on mutual support, empathy and respect.
• Principles of Microeconomics: The unit provides students with a broad grounding of the topic and an understanding of the behaviour of individual agents (individuals, firms, government) and the ways in which they interact in a market economy.ÌýÌý
• Introduction to Accounting: Expand your knowledge and skills needed to progress to further study of financial reporting and/or financial analysis by studying the fundamentals of accounting.
• Organisational Behaviour & Responsible Management: This unit covers the individual, psychological and social aspects relating to people in organisations and the systems that govern them.
• Principles of Macroeconomics: Macroeconomic theory will be explored in this unit, enabling you to apply macroeconomic principles in the analysis of contemporary issues and problems.Ìý

Option units (choose one):

• Introduction to Financial Markets: As an introduction to financial markets, you will gain a level of conceptual understanding that will allow you to critically evaluate the fundamentals of finance and its implications in the current scenario.
• Business Simulation: Through simulation, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience by analysing data and collaborating with your peers to resolve dilemmas, making managerial decisions.
• Fundamentals of Marketing: By identifying interesting marketing problems, you'll understand the range of marketing solutions available, and learn how to develop appropriate marketing strategies by focusing on real-life case studies.

The second year is designed to prepare you for the world of work, by strengthening your employability skills, readying you for the placement application process, and helping you better manage complexity and ambiguity. You will learn about business strategy and will study specialist economics units, allowing you to deepen your knowledge and understanding, in preparation for your final year and beyond.

Core units:

• Recruiting, Selecting & Retaining Talent: You will be encouraged to develop an understanding of the recruitment and selection process, and contemporary recruitment and selection techniques, whilst developing an understanding of their position in relation to the wider talent pool.Ìý
• Strategic Management: You'll develop the ability to apply appropriate tools and techniques to critically analyse the organisation and its environment, learning about the development of competitive marketing strategy and operations
• Intermediate Microeconomics: The unit aims to develop your knowledge of the fundamental economic and quantitative techniques and your application to business, management and economics. You will further develop your understanding of microeconomic analysis and its relevance to real business decision-making. They would develop a critical awareness of business environments and of the scope and limitations of economic analysis.Ìý
• Intermediate Macroeconomics: In this unit you will develop knowledge and the ability to critically analyse macroeconomic problems and issues in the context of the global economy. You will learn the theoretical and empirical foundations to understand macroeconomic activity and policy in a global context.

Option units (choose two):

• Management Accounting: You will develop an understanding of basic management account concepts, techniques and practices and the quantitative skills to apply them in an organisational context.
• Corporate Financial Management: This unit presents and discusses the importance of financial management to a corporate entity based on the relevant theories. It analyses the business environment in which the financial management decisions are taken both in the short-run and also in the long-run. Further, it demonstrates how capital and risk are linked to financial management and applies key principles, techniques, tools, and instruments to assist in corporate decision-making.
• Financial Reporting:ÌýYou will evaluate and apply the regulatory framework of accounting, prepare basic consolidated accounts in accordance with IFRS, for a simple group and analyse and appraise company performance.
• Global Operations Management: This unit will cover the impact global operations management has on the business as a whole and the close relationship of operations management with other business function.
• Project Management: Provides a practical communication focused perspective of the rapidly evolving digital world.Ìý As such it offers students practical assistance in shaping professional digital identity and footprint.Ìý
• Consumer Behaviour & Contemporary Issues: This unit aims to extend your understanding of marketing, providing a critical understanding of the role and application of consumer behaviour within marketing and the wider organisation.
• Branding & Integrated Communications: Covers strategic issues of integration and planning as well as the tactical considerations needed to execute relevant marketing communications campaigns that meet consumer’s needs.
• Supply Chain Management: As an essential aspect of business today you'll explore and evaluate key elements of supply chain management that requires numerous operational activities
• Fundamentals of HRM: This unit will introduce you to the Human Resource Management function and its practice, using frameworks, analysis and case studies for context.
• Globally Responsible Business Practice: Gain the ability to critically evaluate the complex role of business practice in global systems and their understanding of management processes.
• Digital Marketing Fundamentals: This unit provides a practical communication focused perspective of the rapidly evolving digital world, offering practical assistance in shaping professional digital identity and footprint.Ìý

The course includes an optional 30-week (minimum) placement between your second and final year, providing a valuable opportunity to develop your vocational skills and understanding of the workplace.

Your two specialist Economics units will enable you to develop critical knowledge, understanding and skills in the areas of domestic and international economic analysis, preparing you for your future career or further studies.

• Research in Business & Management: The unit provides an overview of research methods available covering both qualitative and quantitative approaches, with a particular emphasis on the development and delivery of ethical and sustainable research.
• Organisational Leadership: The aim of this unit is to critically explore leadership styles, theories and followership concepts in a range of organisational contexts.
• International Economics: Providing you with a comprehensive and broad introduction to international trade, finance, and trade policy and trade institutions, you will gain a basic understanding of international trade economics and rules, as well as the politics and institutions that go behind the economics.

• Dissertation:ÌýYou willÌýdevelop theÌýknowledge and understanding of project and change management through aÌýdissertation focusing on a business or societal problem or opportunity of yourÌýchoice.Ìý
• Reflective Practitioner Project: This unit aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of workplace and career-related challenges, as well as your critical thinking and writing skills, through a reflective project focusing on your placement year.
• Hacking for Sustainability Project: This is a team-based consultancy-style project, which gives you the opportunity to work on challenging sustainability problems being faced by large organisations, such as the MoD. ThisÌýProject involves working in a team, as well as with stakeholders and a client, and includes a mix of 'real-life' individual and group deliverables
• Applied Business Project:ÌýThe Applied Business Project is an independently-managed unit, which aims to develop and enhance your self-management, critical thinking, analytical, evaluative and reflective skills, as well as your personal commitment, resilience and resourcefulness. The unit further aims to enhance your ability to make assumptions, manage information gaps and tolerate ambiguity, complexity and uncertainty.

Option units (choose one):

• Investment Management:ÌýThis unit will address the theoretical principles and quantitative methodologies which underpin the pricing and valuation of the primary investable asset classes (equities, bonds and property) and their application in practice. It also introduces and differentiates between personal wealth management and institutional fund management.
• Public Finance & Policy: As Nation-States begin to raise taxes to address unprecedented levels of public debt, we will consider their decisions, targets, and taboos. We will debate the underlying principles and theories on which our tax policies have evolved. This unit aims to provide a technically and academically challenging examination of public finance, in theory and in practice.Ìý

We select candidates for this course by looking at your application; there are usually no interviews or selection activities needed. We look at individual applications and make a tailored offer based on your potential to succeed on the course considering a range of factors, including your academic achievements, work and other experience, reference and personal statement, and in some cases, your performance at an interview or a portfolio review. If you are unable to meet the entry requirements, we may be able to make you an offer through Access¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ if you meet certain criteria e.g. you have been in care or live in an area where fewer people typically progress to Higher Education. If you don't meet our published tariff, we will accept you at least 8 points below if your personal circumstances match our Access¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ criteria.Ìý

Our offer-making will typically be based on your most recent qualifications, including any required subjects where applicable. We'll consider all qualifications when assessing your application, although these may not be part of our offer.

If you do not meet the criteria of your original offer, we may still offer you a place. We will review your whole application and consider all academic qualifications (including those not in the offer) to see if you have the academic potential to succeed on the course. Access¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ: Access¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ provides you with the opportunity to tell us about your circumstances that are not always evident in your UCAS application. This widening access initiative also considers relevant criteria such as being in care or if you live in an area with a low participation rate in Higher Education - if you are eligible, your offer could be up to 16 UCAS tariff points below the published tariff.

Apprenticeships: We recognise the transferable knowledge and skills gained through apprenticeships and welcome applications from students with a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship recognised by the Institute for Apprenticeships. Each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Deferred entry: We are happy to consider eligible applicants for deferred entry. If you have already submitted your application, please submit your deferral request through our website.Ìý

Direct entry: We welcome applications from students who have previously studied at degree level at other institutions and wish to transfer onto a ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ course. Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedure enables credit awarded from one institution to contribute to a ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ award, subject to an application process. Mature applicants: We recognise that mature applicants may have a wealth of experience rather than formal qualifications, so we’ll consider your application on these merits if included in your application. You’ll need to apply to ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ in the usual way through UCAS and you may be invited to an interview to discuss your suitability for the course based on the experience you tell us about in your application.

Dr Mehwish Mufti holds a PhD in Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources. She is a #¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵProud graduate and holds distinction in MSc. IBM and a successfully completed, fully funded scholarship from ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ for her PhD in Organisational Behavior and HR. She has recently joined ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ as a lecturer in Business and Management in Department of People and Organisations. She has a passion for innovative teaching methods, such as Lego ® serious play ® and interactive learning technology for introducing and learning new concepts and skills, where students are at the heart of learning process. Her research has looked at interdisciplinary concepts from Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Behavioral Science which can influence individuals’ decision making and feedback-seeking behavior. She has taught in ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ’s Business School, as well as Media School, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels on units such as Marketing, Media and Communication, and has supervised research projects. She has lived and worked in Pakistan and ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ. She has worked in a business consultancy firm, retail banking, and social development sector including UNDP.

Mark Ridolfo is a Principal Academic in Human Resources & Organisational Behaviour, within the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ University Business School. A passionate, student-oriented innovator, Mark has been lecturing at ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ University since 1992.

Living and working in France, Germany, Italy and China has helped inform Mark’s main interests of cross-cultural communication and management.

He also delivers courses in professional effectiveness – specialising in presentations, report writing, online communication, and negotiation.

Adam Blake is a Professor of Economics in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ University, and Head of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research. He is a specialist in computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling and has used this modelling technique to examine the economic interrelationships between tourism and other sectors of the economies of the UK, USA, Scotland, the Canary Islands, Malta, Cyprus, Mauritius and Brazil. His research has provided both theoretical advances and research based evidence for government organisations.

With articles in journals such as Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management and Tourism Economics, Adam is a well known researcher in the field of tourism economics. He is also a resource editor for Annals of Tourism Research, a member of the editorial board of Tourism Economics and a former President of the International Association for Tourism Economics. His research articles have addressed issues such as the economic effects of tourism crises (Foot and Mouth disease in the UK in 2001; September 11th in the US) and analysis of public policy measures in response to such crises; the economic impact of tourism taxation; and the economic impact of tourism in developing countries.ÌýMore recently, this has included modelling and analysis of the economic effects that tourism has on poor households in developing countries, and the suitability of tourism promotion as a means of alleviating poverty.

Dr Mehdi Chowdhury is the Deputy Head of the Department of Accounting, Finance &ÌýEconomics, in the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ University Business School. HeÌýjoined as a Lecturer in Economics in September 2011 after obtaining my PhD from the School of Economics of the University of Nottingham and later promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer and finally the Deputy Head. HeÌýreceived his Masters Degrees in Economics from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan and the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh andÌýworked as a Teaching Assistant in Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Bristol from 2009-2011.

Dr Chowdhury's current research interest includesÌýthe refugee crisis, international migration, education and human capital development. A blog on his project on the Rohingya Refugee Crisis is available on this link He isÌýinterested in supervising students for PhD on the refugee crisis, international migration and international trade.

Dr Dermot McCarthy was born in Kerry (Ireland) in 1980 and studied at the University of Limerick. HeÌýgraduated with a bachelor of business studies in 2003, majoring in economics and finance and doing a minor in econometrics. HeÌýcontinued his studies at the University of Limerick, graduating with a PhD in 2007 and remaining as a post-doctorate research fellow with the university until January 2010. Since that time he hasÌýheld the position of lecturer in economics at ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵ University.

Dr McCarthy's research interests are cross-disciplinary, encapsulating areas of economics and employee relations. More specifically, his research focuses on public-sector economics, theory of the firm, public-sector industrial relations, employee share-ownership, and employee psychology. He hasÌýpublished a number of papers relating to the impact of privatisation and employee share-ownership on employee attitudes and commitment in the workplace.
